COMENIUS CLOSING CEREMONY
On the 10th of May, in the
afternoon, we had the closing ceremony of our Comenius Proyect “North and
South: Building bridges with languages.com” that has been developed with Marne
College, a secondary school in Bolsward (Frisland, The Netherlands).
Bilingual students, their families
and ours attended the ceremony.
First the presenters thanked the
audience for their presence and immediately introduced the first part of the
event: 1º Bachillerato students presented their works on different aspects of
the European Union. Then 4º ESO students that had participated in the exchange,
talked about the differences they had seen between the Dutch Education system
and our system.
Finally, three Bachillerato students did a presentation of
the trip to Bolsward.
Some videos on the Dutch visit to
Luanco were shown at the end.
In the school interior yard, there
is an exhibition displaying all the works and pictures of the activities done
in the Project.
TRAVEL AVOIDS PREJUDICE, BIGOTRY, AND NARROWNESS

We are really
lucky. Not everyday such an overpowering
opportunity comes to your door. But being honest, this opportunity of
participating in a Comenius Program was also accompanied by hard
work. We had to squeeze our time and to make the most of every
second, we worked in pairs and in groups, we did many researches,
powerPoints, debates, a conference… but the fruit of our labor was
to spend 10 amazing days with all expenses paid in the cool country
of The Netherlands, speaking English all the time and enjoying the
stay with our Dutch partners.
From the first
minute to the end of the exchange, we had a fantastic time and we
were all day learning from each other… different culture, different
education system….
The trip started the
10th of May.
At seven o'clock in the morning we were already on the bus heading
to our first stop, Tours in France. There we visited the city and we
had dinner in a Mc Donald. We were so tired because of the long bus
trip that we spent our first night in the hotel. The next day, we
continued to our destination and at the drop of a hat, we were in the
flat country of Holland , in Bolsward with our Dutch friends.
We were welcomed at
Marne College by our Dutch partners. They offered us something to eat
and then we played some games to break the ice between our new
families and us. We really had fun. After that, we went home with our
Dutch partners and their families.
The week got off to
a better start. The following day we attended some lessons in Marne
College and we could see the differences between the Dutch educative
system and ours. In the afternoon, we visited Bolsward.
Next day, it was
devoted to The European Union. We had a conference, debate with our
partners about the future of Europe and we presented our works about
different aspects of the European Union.
The following day,
we went to Amsterdam. There, we went to the Rijks Museum and could
admire wonderful pictures by some of the most famous Dutch artists.
We also visited the center of Amsterdam including the famous Red
District. We also had time for shopping.
Next day we went by
ferry to Ameland Island where we rode bikes and played stratego in
the forest. We also went to a Music festival which was celebrated in
Leeuwarden, the capital of Frisia, and to an adventure Park . We did
many activities , we were practicing our English at the same time
that we were having fun.
We had a really
great time in The Netherlands and we are sure we are going to miss
our Dutch friends.
Here you can see
some pictures of our journey to The Netherlands.
WORKS ON THE EUROPEAN UNION
During the months of February and March, we worked on different aspects of the European Union.
We were divided in five groups and these were the issues we worked on:
1) The European Union. What does it mean?
2) EU institutions.
3) History of the European Union
4) EU policies.
5) The enlargement of the EU. The EU and the wider world
We prepared power points presentations and we showed them to our Dutch partners during our stay in Bolsward, as part of a European Day that took place during our week in The Netherlands. In that same day, we participated on debates about different aspects concerning the future of Europe .
Here you can see our presentations.
COMENIUS PROJECT: DUTCH LESSONS IN OUR SCHOOL
Last week (2-9 March, 2015) we were visited by Mrs
Bente Toepoel, a Dutch Language teacher in Marne
College (Bolsward, Friesland,
The Netherlands). She came to our school to give a course on basic Dutch to the
1º Bachillerato students who are going to travel to The Netherlands in May.
This activity is included in the Comenius Project “North and South: Building
bridges with languages” that we are developing with the Dutch school. Students
had two periods of Dutch everyday.
During the week, we organized different activities.
On Tuesday 3rd of March, the 2º ESO Bilingual
Students, accompanied by their Music teacher, played the Frisian anthem in the
assembly hall to welcome the Dutch teacher. Later, they went on a tour in
Luanco to show her around our village.
3º ESO Bilingual students were working on famous Dutch
painters both in Arts and in English. They did a painting of Van Goh´s famous
picture “Bedroom in Arlés” and prepared power point presentations on three
famous Dutch painters: Rembrandt, Veermer and Van Gogh.
Some 1º of Bachillerato students worked in Science and
English on two Dutch scientists: Eise Eisinga (Dronrijp 1749- Franeker 1828)
and Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek (Delft
1632- 1723). On Wednesday afternoon 4th of March, students presented their
works to families and students from the Bilingual Section and 1º Bachillerato
and the Dutch teacher gave a talk about The Netherlands and the Dutch school
system.
On Thursday 4th of March, there was a sport activity
organized by the Physical Education teachers. 1º of Bachillerato students
played a competition of a Dutch game called Korfball.
On Friday, after the Dutch lessons had finished, 1º
Bachillerato students met in the school library for a competition on The
Netherlands. Divided in groups, they had to answer questions about different
aspects of the Dutch culture and language. Although it was a close competition,
the tie was broken at the end and there was a winner team.
All along the week, we learnt new things about The
Netherlands. We enjoyed the visit of Mrs Bente Toepoel a lot.
WORKING ON THE DUTCH COURSE
One of the activities
included in our project is a course in basic Dutch. It was prepared by a Dutch
Language teacher from Marne College and loaded in our eTwinning project page.
At the moment, we are finishing
the Dutch lessons. Most of us have already done all the exercises and others
are going to finish them soon.
The course is being
complicated for us and it is taking us a long time to do the exercises. We
think this language is really difficult to learn, but we can understand it is
not as difficult as Spanish. We are very lucky to have the opportunity of
learning some Dutch words and expressions and it is something we should
appreciate.
A teacher from Marne College
will come to our school in March to teach us basic Dutch so that we can speak some
Dutch with our partners when we go to The Netherlands in May.

School year 2014-2015 Planning
New school year and we keep on working in our Comenius Project “North and South: Building bridges with languages.com”with the school Marne College from Bolsward ( Friesland, The Netherlands).
The frame of all our work this school year is the future of Europe. To share our ideas and works with our Dutch mates, a project in the Etwinning platform has been started.
During the first term, we will learn Dutch using lessons prepared by a Dutch teacher and loaded in the platform. In March this teacher will travel to Luanco and spend a week in our school to teach us basic Dutch.
During the second term we will work on topics related to the European Union and the future of Europe.
In May we will travel to The Netherlands to visit our mates. While we are in The Netherlands we will have the opportunity of knowing a new school system and a different culture and enjoy the stay with our Dutch mates.
An exhibition about our experience will be organized when we come back.
To sum up, this year will be great but also it will also imply hard work. We will keep a record of all the activities in this blog.
26 March
We have been asked to do something different today.
We’re going to have a song contest called EuroCrisol in the next Cultural Week. This is the week in which our Dutch partners will be here. We’ve been chosen to do the introduction videos for each of the countries. This is going to be good fun…
19th MARCH 2014
Next Saturday, the Spanish teacher Lucía Díaz is going to leave for Bolsward to teach our Dutch partners an introduction to Spanish. Hopefully they’ll be able to kind of communicate with our family and friends using the Spanish they’ll learn with her.
We keep on working and we have a new task for today. We’ve been asked to write an article for the new edition of our school newspaper, El Crisol. We’ve learnt a lot about The Netherlands in the last few months, and now we must share it with our school. Itsaso’s article is the one which has been chosen to be published. You can read it here:
The Netherlands
and our Comenius Programme
This school year we have started a bilateral Comenius project financed
by the European Community. In this project, twenty-two students from The
Netherlands are going to visit us during one week, and then, twenty-two of us
are going to visit them next year.
We have been working tough and for a long time so far this school year ,
and we have learnt a lot about Frisia, the province where the Dutch students
are from, and about The Netherlands in general. We have to know a lot from
their country, because they will be visiting us next May! It seems that still
there is a long time for them to come, but it is not that much. We are so
excited about the idea of having Dutch people in our houses!, and they’re so
excited to come here too!
We both have done a lot of assignments to learn about each other’s
country, for example, powerpoint presentations about their government,
geography, culture… Did you know that The Netherlands is a “low-lying” country?
This means that the land is lower than the sea level. It is a problem for the
population, because it can carry so many natural catastrophes, but there are a
lot of structures which keep water out of land.
About its government, The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy, and
it’s been classified as one of the most democratic countries in the world. In
The Netherlands, the first language they speak is Dutch. For us, the Spanish
people, it is a very weird language, because it has got a lot of consonants
with very few vowels, and also it has got a lot of sounds. “Wat dacht je van deze?”, that means ”How are you?” in Dutch.
After doing so much work, we are so excited to welcome the
Dutch people here in Luanco, and the date is becoming closer ..., and I’m sure it’s going to be fantastic!

12th March, 2014
In this day we have finished presenting the PowerPoint presentations. One of the groups talked about the history of the Netherlands and the last one about its economy. Next to this, we’ll have to come to conclusions with our partners after comparing their work and ours. It can be very interesting.
5th March, 2014
Today we have started presenting the Powerpoints to our classmates. First, it was the group which worked on the geography of the Netherlands, then another group talked about its culture and food, and lastly the group which worked on its government. The truth is that we’re learning a lot about this country. You can see us here:
GEOGRAPHY OF THE NETHERLANDS:
26th February, 2014
Today teachers have told us that the presentations are ready to be shown to the rest of the class, at last! We’ll start next Wednesday.
12th February, 2014
Once we finished our presentations, the
teachers revised them and today they have given them back to us. We
have to improve quite a few things. Hopefully they’ll be fine next time
we hand them in.
22nd JANUARY 2014
We are still working on the Powerpoint presentations. It’s taking a long time finding pictures and matching them with the texts we already have, but we’re organising the work and each of us does different parts of the project.
